What’s the difference between a parameter and a hyperparameter?

Parameters are configuration variables internal to the model whose value can be estimated using optimization algorithms from data. Parameters traditionally tailor hypotheses to specific sets of data. On the other hand, hyperparameters are external configurations whose value cannot be estimated from data. Hyperparameters are used to tune specific problems in machine learning algorithms. 

Parameters in AI are closely linked to machine learning, particularly in deep learning, where complex neural networks are employed. These parameters essentially represent the weights and biases that connect the neurons in the neural network, shaping how data is processed and transformed throughout the network’s layers.

The number of parameters in AI models is an indicator of their complexity and capacity to capture intricate patterns in data. As model architectures evolve and become deeper and wider, the number of parameters increases, leading to more powerful and expressive AI models.
